Avenuel magazine

The top South Korean glossy style bible AVENUEL magazine afforded me the honour of gracing their 'AJOURNAL' six page section for Octobers Scottish themed edition. Great to be asked :) (previous contributors have been Massimo Vitali and Damien Hirst). Rough scans below but I will update with clearer digital edition images when they come out. :)

St Andrews Photographic Society

A big thank you to everyone at St Andrews Photographic Society for their hospitality and appreciation last night. Despite an early technical glitch beforehand everything went well and it was great to meet everyone. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and thanks for all the kind words by everyone who came over for a blether after my talk. Also a big personal thank you to Nicola for the invite, coffee and chat beforehand and to John for saving my bacon when my crappy laptop wouldn't play ball.

The International Photography Awards

Happy to say I managed to collect a nice wee 'Honorable mention' award for the image 'Winter sun over Glen Etive' the one image I entered into this years International photography awards. This is a mono version of the same view of the image I posted about earlier. It was taken just before the colour shot where you could still catch some of the suns rays poking through the rapidly gathering cloud.

The Epson international pano awards

Hi all, I just received notification recently that the image I entered earlier this year in the The Epson international pano awards picked up a nice wee 'Bronze' award. The image 'Winter sun over glen etive' is of Stob Dearg looking down towards Glen Etive. Shot early February this year on the way back from a trip up north, I had emerged from Glen Coe on the A82 and the scene unfolding on my right was one I had pre-visualised as a perfect alignment of elements. The sun was ideally cupped in the scooped space of the glen, the glorious golden light smouldering behind the thick moody cloud and the blanket of white helped to reflect this glow and accentuate the wonderful textures of the mighty Buachaille.

Network rail exhibition update

The exhibition of stunning landscapes pooled from the last 5 years of the Landscape photographer of the year competition is now in place in the main concourse of Glasgow central station and it looks great! I was down yesterday and met up with Charlie Waite, the esteemed landscape photographer and founder of the national competition. I also had the pleasure of meeting Shahbaz Majeed and Karl Williams who both have beautiful prints on display. Glasgow central is the only Scottish leg of the touring display and runs until Friday so be sure and check it out.

Sunday Herald spread

Delighted by the use of my image 'Loch Tarff from Suidhe Chuimein' in today's Sunday Herald newspaper. The photograph is coupled with a brilliant piece by Susan Wright about the potential damage and controversy surrounding wind-farm proposals in the highlands of Scotland, also nice to have my byline credit alongside a pic of the legendary conservationist John Muir.

Dundee talk 'The Outside inside'

Despite my apprehension at delivering a presentation for the first time, my talk to Dundee photographic society actually went really well largely in part to the stellar hospitality I received by its members. The society made me feel really welcome and I received plenty of kind feedback from a receptive audience. I now Intend as a result to open myself up to similar invitations in the future as a result. Special thanks go to Dave Clark, Brian Clark and Dawn White for honouring me with the invitation.

Busy old week

Been a busy old week off work from the Herald and Times, amongst a bout of illness and various other shennanigans I have been preparing for a talk I'm giving at the esteemed Dundee Photographic Society on Monday, I was delighted to be asked a few months back to come up and discuss my work with the societies' members, It will be a good experience as I have never done one before, although a wee bit apprehensive as the numbers in attendance could be over a hundred! Also got word from the Scottish nature photographer of the year competition that two of my recent images from Rannoch moor and Sutherland (below) have been shortlisted for the awards, so keep ye fingers crossed for me! x

Essay of the week in the Sunday Herald

Good spread featuring one of my pics today in the Sunday Herald's essay of the week. 'Skye and Cleadale from the Sgurr' is one of my photographs I shot last year while staying for the 15th year anniversary of the islanders buy-out of Eigg. A good couple of hours from the pier, the walk to the summit of the mighty Sgurr is mandatory while on the isle, the views north and northwest of Applecross, Skye, and beyond are truly stunning, cannae wait to get back in June....

BBC Countryfile magazine

February's edition of BBC's Countryfile magazine is running a nice wee article highlighting beautiful Cornwall, and they have included my image (here) of St Michael's mount in Marazion. Cornwall is a place I have been several summers with the family as it's landscape offers some of the finest beaches and stunning coastlines this country has to offer (after Scotland of course....)

Herald pic of the day

Another nice wee bit of exposure in todays Herald...

I have driven the northern stretch of the A82 along the banks of loch Lomond countless times, usually on-route to various photographic locations further afield and the little float of pines that is Tarbet Isle has always caught my eye. So, I determined to find somewhere to pull the car in and clamber along the shore to get a shot of it on this dreich December day. Conditions were ripe with a brooding sky that appealed to my senses and I fortunately found a great wee stump of weathered wood just out from the shore as great foreground interest. Shot on a canon 7D with a 10 stop ND filter, 240sec, f14 @ iso100
