Sutherland's splendour

I have added some new work from my recent expedition to a previously unexplored area of my beloved homeland, the stunning Sutherland. I spent two nights in Lochinver at the Fisherman's mission and really hit it off in terms of the weather, autumns rich palette was on full display and it never rained once. I WILL return. ;) click the image to go to the images.....

Fish and Photos, Rannoch Moor

A recent fly-fishing jaunt to Rannoch moor was a great opportunity to test some new kit, I recently got my mits on a 10-stop filter for the Cokin 'P' system I regularly use. I usually slot in a ND grad  for exposure correction and sometimes a combination of ND's for long exposures that allow for a sense of movement in the image, typically for 'slow water' effects. The Hitech filter ( a cheaper Lee 'Big Stopper' equivalent)...

Loving The Lakes

Wow. I had never truly visited the Lake district before ( bar a half-day field trip back in my hazy art school days ) I fell in love with it. I booked a cottage in Bowness-on-Windermere for me and the familia for two weeks, and spent most of the time with the brood on daytrips to the likes of Coniston, Ambleside, Ravenglass, Grasmere etc, and had a great day every day despite the constant presence of Mordor skies and oppressive rainfall....

Isle of Eigg visit

Just added a selection of landscape images today from last weekends trip to #Eigg.... http://damianshields.photoshelter.com/gallery/Isle-of-Eigg/G00003Sxin9QQXPE/ Needless to say I had a fantastic few days on the stunning Isle of Eigg in the 'sonsy' company of some good friends, Johnny Jobson, Sports Ed from the Sunday Herald, Sculptor Shaun McLaren and photographer Joe Maclay, managed to get a few shots I'm happy with, although, what with the 15th year anniversary Ceilidh and everything else going on I didn't quite concentrate enough on making...

Greetings cards

More good news, my image of the old stone bridge over the river Braan in Dunkeld has been published by Camden graphics as part of a range of greetings cards showing a selection of 26 images from the last five years of the Landscape photographer of the year competition, and will appear in shops all over later this year.. http://www.ukgreetings.co.uk/Cards/Camden-Graphics/Everyday/Landscapes.html ...

Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE)

I was delighted to be contacted by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) via Diana Leppard of Take-a-view (the organisers of the Landscape photographer of the year awards) recently. They are moving to new premises and are sourcing photography to display in their new offices that reflect the ethos of the work they do, and have requested the use of my St Michaels mount image that was highly commended in the 'living the view' category from the...

Return to Eigg

Really looking forward to my second trip to the Isle of Eigg for a few days and especially the 15th year birthday ceilidh of the Islanders buy-out on Saturday. The weathers looking like a mixed bag at the moment, but hey, should make for some dramatic backdrops to the beautiful Isle's varied landscapes.....

Glen Orchy

A couple of shots from a quick stop on the river Orchy in Argyll. It was a scorcher of a day but some dark skies started to gather towards the north east that provided the ideal backdrop to the beautifully lit rock formations. I had to stop down with 2 cokin nd filters to get some movement in the water compensating for the brightly lit foreground, I also added a circular orange filter to the lens to give me added contrast. ...

Taking the plunge

While up at the falls of Bruar on Monday I had the pleasure of meeting a team of gorge jumping trainees from Caledonian first aid http://www.cafirstaid.co.uk/index.php?id=50  I had been poised on the steep bank by the impressive lower falls and got a bit of a shock with the sudden appearance of a gorge jumper plunging into the freezing pool ahead of me and proceeded to scream loudly as if in agony, a bit of a shock to the system and I was...

Falls of Bruar and The Hermitage

Made the trip up Perthshire way on Monday to visit two of my favourite haunts from the region, the beautiful Hermitage in Dunkeld and the falls of Bruar in Pitagowan. Both locations are full of photographic opportunities but it has to be the rocks that hold my interest the most. The caramel tones and layered textures of the water worn stone is sublime. Benderloch and Tralee bay

Had a wee trip with the family up in Oban last weekend and managed escape my fatherly duties for a couple of hours. Made the walk down to the rocks at the end of the beach at Tralee bay as the sun was dipping down and got a couple of images I'm happy with. I've vistited this spot at low tide before and always marvel at the strange and beautiful formations there, caused by the subtle erosion over the ages by the tides. oh, and a shout out to maker...
